If it’s the first thing you do or see in the morning and the last thing you do or see at night… you’re probably addicted. If you “can’t live without it,” you’re probably addicted. If you feel yourself shaking without it, you can’t get it off your mind, and being without it is ruining your day… well, you get it. Are you seeing a pattern? Addiction is something that is so easily dismissed and overlooked, yet it can be completely life ruining - even life threatening. But, what would it look like to be fully and completely addicted to the Word and the voice of God Himself?

Do you think you could become so invested in spending time with Him that you literally can’t even imagine a second without Him? Do you see yourself diving full-force into His word without hesitation first thing in the morning and last thing at night? Let’s look to some examples from the Bible to see what addiction to His word looks like, and some ways that we as His creation can overcome our own addictions thanks to His grace and mercy.

READ PSALM 119:17-24

Notice how the Psalmist talks about his soul being “crushed with longing” as it says in some translations. This is the type of longing that we should be feeling towards His word. That same feeling we get when we’re addicted to a TV show like Grey’s or Stranger Things, and we HAVE to catch every episode otherwise our lives aren’t complete. That should be the same type of longing that we have to tackle the word everyday, and then show out to the world afterwards.

Now let’s backtrack a little bit. Notice I said something about “grace” and “mercy.” These two words show up all over the place in the Bible, but how often do these phrases show up when you think about addiction? Do you feel like you wouldn’t receive grace and mercy if you confessed your addiction to drugs or alcohol to a friend? Do you feel as though your addiction to porn or sexual immorality is too much for the God of the universe? Do you think you don’t deserve the grace and mercy He promises us all throughout the Bible? If you feel this way, 1 Corinthians actually has something to say that might ease the hurt a little bit.

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. - 1 Cor 10:13-14

If you understand that God is faithful and that He loves you, just as this verse says, He will help you overcome whatever it is that you may be facing. You are enough and you will be shown the grace and mercy that He promises.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2-3

Do not be discouraged because you feel addiction. Be lifted up and know that you are not alone. You can get through this with Him by your side
